Why are 40 oz beers so cheap?

why is the 22oz bottle of stella artois or becks beer so much more expensive than the 40 oz. malt liquors? What makes the 40 so cheap? Do they have cheap artificial chemicals in them? Like antifreeze, formaldahyde, drano, or epoxy resin?
