What does strontium and copper release when burned?

I want to teach my little cousin how to tell what compound is present in a flame by looking at its emission; strontium is red, copper is blue. I'm mixing a strontium nitrate compound with potassium chlorate and sucrose; what kind of smoke does it give off? Is it mostly carbon dioxide from the sugar? I'm also mixing copper chloride with the same KCL03, C12H22011 mixture.
